Hello Neighbors,

My goodness there are a lot of things going on in the city in the coming weeks. Sorry its so long but you need the information. Just be glad it didn't come in 15 different emails like it did to me.

I've started a new twitter page - It is ypsilantievents at twitter.com. If you don't know what twitter is: You can 'follow' ypsilantievents and postings will be updated to your twitter page. You can also have the postings forwarded to your cell phone in text messaging form (only standard text messaging rates apply - this means if you have unlimited text messaging as part of your plan they are free). I'm going to post just about everything cool, fun, or interesting I find out.
Some examples are:

I forgot my date book for some of these events so follow the twitter feed to get more information
The Aubrees - Linenkeugal food and drink night at Celebrations (what was Cadys)
The Ypsilanti Public School Foundation BBQ and Texas Holdum Fundraiser -- Info Below
Powell's Pub - Bean Bag Toss Competition - Seems they are doing them Bi-Weekly $10.00 entry, specials, big cash prize

City residents can get free EMU Library Cards

As Murph mentioned, City of Ypsi residents (amongst others) are
eligible for a free EMU library card. Here's a summary:

-you can get an EMU library card for free
-you have to go to the library (Halle library, off Oakwood north of
Crosstenaw, off the #4 & 33 buses) to get it, with your state
ID/driver's license
-it has to be renewed every 6 mos
-you have to present a picture ID with your library card
-you can only access circulating books, children's books, and gov't
documents (21-day loan period, renewable online at portal.emich.edu)
-they can fine you for being late (25 cents/day, or per this chart:
http://www.emich.edu/halle/circloanperiods.html ).
-you can contact them at (734) 487-0020 x2140 or lib_circulation at emich.edu .

Here's the word from their website (from
http://www.emich.edu/halle/services_visitors.html ):

"Individuals outside of the current EMU community are eligible to
receive a library courtesy card if they fall into one of the following
categories:

Ypsilanti residents
Eastern Michigan University Alumni
University faculty (from colleges and universities in Michigan and Ohio)
Elderwise participants
Michicard holders

Individuals who do not fit into any of these categories can purchase a
Friends of Eastern Michigan University Library card for $25 per year.

You must pick up your library courtesy card in person. Applicants must
be 18 years of age, and must have a valid driver's license or Michigan
ID card when applying for the card. Borrowing privileges are updated
every six months (except for Friends of Eastern Michigan University
Library cardholders).

Visiting borrowers must present their EMU courtesy card and a picture
ID (either a valid state ID or a driver's license) upon checking out
materials.

Checkout Limits

Visiting borrowers may have 5 items checked out at any time. To view a
list of the items you have currently checked out, go to the library
catalog and click on Your Info/Renewals. After entering your courtesy
card number and last name, you should see a list of those items you
have checked out.
Borrowing and Loan Periods

Visiting borrowers may check out the following items: circulating
books (third level and Automated Retrieval Collection), children's
books (second level), and government documents.

Loan periods differ according to the type of material:
Books and Government Documents: 21 days
Reserves: varies, but most have a two-hour loan period
Videos and DVDs (non-reserve): 3 hours
Video Reference: 3 hours
CDs and Audiocassettes: 3 hours
Journals and Reference Materials: no check out

It is the borrower's responsibility to know the due date of the
material checked out.

Renewals

Books and Government Documents may be renewed one additional 21 day
period, provided that the item is not needed by another library
patron. Items consisting of more then one piece, i.e., a book and a
disc, cannot be renewed online. Courtesy card patrons must renew
their materials before the due date and you cannot renew your
materials after they are overdue. Renewals can be made online using
the library catalog, portal.emich.edu, by clicking where it says My
Account and entering your barcode number and last name. Check those
items you would like renewed, your new due date will appear on the
right hand side. If your item cannot be renewed you will see the
message “CANNOT BE RENEWED ONLINE. PLEASE RETURN BY THE DUE DATE”. You
are responsible for all fees incurred if the item did not renew
online. Items can also be renewed in person at the Circulation Desk.
Contact the circulation desk for assistance, (734) 487-0020 x 2140."

Luna Lake Update

To All our Friends & Supporters,

Thanks to some very generous and determined volunteers, the Luna Lake Native Plants Garden at Prospect Park is looking better than ever. Yesterday afternoon, we completed our second and final workday for the year - weeding and spreading good hardwood around the entire garden. I encourage you to stroll by to admire the plants that are in bloom or just making a lush, green display of their healthy leaves.

As you continue to enjoy the Garden, we ask that you help us to keep it looking good by doing the following:

    • Please pick up and dispose of litter;
    • Please let others know that foot traffic through the Garden is discouraged for the time being, while our plants get established.
    • Although we appreciate the thought, please refrain from doing extemporaneous weeding, raking, planting, watering or mulching outside of designated work days. Many of our young plants are difficult to see and may be hard for some to distinguish from weeds. If you have some plants you wish to donate, please contact me (Rachel) and I will be happy to help you to plant any approved natives in the appropriate areas.

We are looking forward to the display of Fall foliage and flowers and to next year's Second Annual Luna Lake Hoedown. If you are interested in joining our planning committee, or just getting involved, feel free to contact either myself, Mackenzi Retti - karenlea831 at comcast.net - (East Prospect Park Neighborhood Association) or Kurt Anscheutz - kdasmoot at comcast.net - (Prospect Park Neighborhood Association). Thanks to all of you that assisted with the project this year. We especially appreciate your commitment to volunteer your time and energy during the busy Summer months!
