Hello Neighbors,
Coming in September there will be a music festival in Riverside Park. This festival has been designed to reflect the Southern roots* of Ypsilanti so it will include Bluegrass and Americana Roots music. The selected name is the "Ypsitucky Jamboree" but the use of Ypsitucky has brought with it the wrath of those who think the word is an insult to the city and is something that we need to get away from. The City has called a special meeting of the Ypsi Human Relations Commission for May 18, 2009 to discuss it. ( The meeting is to be held at City Council Chambers, located at One South Huron Street, at 7:30 PM. ) I'm interested in knowing how the residents of the PPNA feel about the use of this word? If you have opinions about it, either way, let me know especially if you are from Kentucky. prospectparkneighborhood at comcast.net. I'll compose a list of People's responses and send them on through the correct channels.
*FYI -- Ypsilanti is a Greek Name; Many of the prominant founding families were from NY; The Southern roots stem from the industrial revolution and mainly WWII era when people left the Coal mines of KY to work at the factories in MI.
Walk to School Day -- Several of the area schools, including Adams, are going to be doing a "Walk to School Day" this Friday as part of a Safe Routes to School project! Keep an eye out for the little ones this week! (and always)
Walk and Wag this Saturday -- Walk & Wag 2009 Saturday, May 16th 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
