If you didn't get a chance to visit the Downtown Farmers Market this summer they are bringing it indoors this winter.

TUESDAY (today): Downtown Ypsi WINTER Farmers' Market starting this Tuesday, November 10th from 3-7pm, INDOORS at the Corner Brewery. More than 10 local produce growers, Zingerman's cheese and Grassfields Cheese, beef, pork, buffalo, and chicken products, Ugly Mug coffee, Pilar's Tamales (to go only!), a few crafts, apple cider, baked goods from the Ypsi Food Co-op, Maggie's Baked Goods, and Stone Hearth Bakery!

Other dates are The Winter Market will be November 10th & 24th, and December 8th & 22nd from 3-7pm at Corner Brewery on the corner of Forest and Norris in Ypsilanti; 720 Norris St.

Greenies!

We all have some old, battered, beat up t-shirts that we shouldn't be wearing anymore, or at least some t-shirts that are yard sale worthy. We might even have old bed sheets we never use for one reaosn or another.

On November 18th, in the Phelps/Sellers Lounge, GREEN and SAHAH will be turning these t-shirts and sheets into quilts to be donated to local shelters at our monthly EcoArts. However, without the t-shirts and sheets, this won't be possible. Please drop off any t-shirts or sheets you are willing to part with to the GREEN desk in 346 EMU Student Center before Wednesday , November 18th. If you're in doubt as to whether a shirt or sheet is even worth keeping for a quilt, let us be the judge (we can recycle it one way or another).

After you drop off your shirt or sheet, don't forget to come to EcoArts in the Phelps/Sellers Lounge from 5-7 PM on Wednesday , November 18th.

Thank you and see you there!

WEDNESDAY: A Smorgasbord of Travel Destinations – Whether you’re planning a winter getaway, taking the family away for spring vacation, or dreaming of future plans, Susan Balogh has some great ideas for you. Highlights include adventure travel, destinations for the family and some great deals in exciting locations. Susan is the President of Breakaway Travel in Ypsilanti. 7:15, Ypsi Senior and Community Center

THURSDAY: Information session: Community Garden Start Up! From 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Ypsilanti SPARK. Contact Growing Hope at (734) 786-8401 to reserve a spot.

As our economy struggles, more and more area residents are growing their own food-- and community gardens are a great way to make sure that people have the space, the soil, and the social support they need to grow for themselves and their families! All of the community gardens in Ypsi-- which are run by amazing volunteers-- have been full the last few years, and the demand just keeps growing both in our community and across SE Michigan!

If you've thought about working with neighbors, colleagues, friends, or classmates to get a group garden going, now is the time to begin to bring people together. Growing Hope's Community & School Garden Development Institute trains your group to get a garden going-- from the goal setting through outreach & fundraising through organizing maintenance.. Our next CSGDI series will be held Thursday, January 21st and meet every Thursday until February 18th from 6:30PM - 8:30PM, and to participate you must have a team of at least 4 collaborators to come to all of the sessions . We will meet at the Ypsilanti SPARK building located at 215 W. Michigan Avenue . Contact Growing Hope for an application so that you may start signing up garden members right away! The deadline to apply is January 1st!

Groups with an existing community or school garden are also welcome-- the course can help you revive or reorganize a garden or go to another level!

If you're interested and ready to learn more, I strongly encourage all of you to attend CSGDI : Information Session, held November 12th from 6:30PM - 8:30PM at the Ypsilanti SPARK building to find out more about what CSGDI is, start thinking about strategies to recruit members and other preliminary steps to get your community garden going! This is a great chance to recruit potential team members to come learn more so they can know what they'd be committing to. Please RSVP to attend the November 12th Information Session by emailing ashley at growinghope.net .

We'd also encourage you to go to http://www.growinghope.net/projects/Startup.shtm l and take our Partner Garden survey, which helps us understand where you are (e.g. just thinking about it, have a site picked out, already have a garden going but want to do more with it, etc). This helps us gauge the interest and orient our resources based on the community need!

Hope to see you Thursday!

Folks,

This message is of particular importance to Ypsilanti area residents but all are welcome.
Georgie Pachella, one of my Normal Park neighbors, is leading a dedicated group of volunteers who have put together a fine new series of events entitled " Talk of the Neighborhood ".
I volunteered to help them spread the word about their upcoming Music Night on January 20th at the Recreation Park Community Center.
Music Night is looking for performers of all music genres...well, almost all. It will be a fairly low-volume affair which is appropriate to the space and purpose of the event.
A small sound system will be provided. You just need to bring your guitfiddles and some friends.
Both beginners and professionals are invited to perform.
Georgie's message is attached for more complete info.
Please contact Georgie for booking information.

Thanks,

--Frank

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Recreation Park Community Center located at 1015 N. Congress St. in Ypsilanti presents evening programming every Monday and Wednesday at 7:15. This series of presentations, performances and demonstrations is called Talk of the Neighborhood . The name, a play on the popular National Public Radio’s Talk of the Nation, chosen because Talk of the Neighborhood enlists experts in their field who present interesting information on a variety of topics.

Talk of the Neighborhood is completely a volunteer program. Presenters include Steven Gross, auctioneer and antiques expert; Lisa Bashert, edible garden expert; Peter di Lorenzi, chef and wine aficionado; Professor Ian Andrews, English Professor with a passion for film and children’s literature; Susan Balogh, president of Breakaway Travel, Local historian James Mann and WEMU’s Linda Yohn, Jesse Morgan from Community Records, and many others.

On Wednesday, January 20 at 7:15 Talk of the Neighborhood is presenting Music Night. We will set the room up "cabaret style" seating. (small tables and a "stage") and Frank Wright, Music Director of the Crossroads Music Festival has agreed to help out with some of the organizational details. Would you like to perform? Please let me know if you can put us on your calendar. We are looking for acoustic music and low amp music. (it's a small poorly baffled space that would not work well with bands with big amp music). We are looking for a variety of local performers. Contact me by e-mail or phone. I need to have performers names by November 15. I send out promotional materials on December 1 for the January calendar.

For monthly schedules, program descriptions and short bios of our presenters, visit our web site at http://sites.google.com/site/talkypsilanti or pick up a schedule at the Community Center or at many area businesses. All programs are $5.00 or a 10 program pass for $30. Passes are available at the door.

Subject: 400 N. River Street Update

Mayor and Council Members:

As you are aware, we are closely monitoring the fire damage at 400 North River.

The city attorney has assessed the situation, and in conjunction with reports from the fire marshal, DPW director, and building department, we have prepared an abatement order pursuant to the Michigan Fire Prevention Code, being Public Act 207 of 1941 (MCL 29.1 et seq).

I expect this order to be served on Mr. Beal by Monday and the corresponding fire inspection reports being delivered to the state fire marshal. The affect of this order will be that the property owner has 10 days in which to signal their intention to comply with the order, and 30 days in which to comply.

In the order we are asking the property owner to either demolish (obviously after obtaining historic district commission approval), or in the alternative, permanently stabilize the structure from the interior so the roadway is no longer blocked.

In the event the property owner fails to comply, we expect to initiate a circuit court action in order to force compliance.

That circuit court action will be commenced after the completion of the 30 day time period, so likely mid December.

I have attached the engineer’s report submitted to the City by Mr. Beal regarding the condition of 400 N. River St.. Please contact me if you should have any questions.

The Planning Commission’s agenda for Wednesday, November 18, includes presentations on several major planning projects:

1. East/West Cross Streetscaping: The City and DDA have secured MDOT funding for streetscape work along Cross Street, running from the railroad tracks in Depot Town to the water tower. MDOT will be starting engineering designs this winter, with construction anticipated in early 2011. The Planning Commission meeting will be hearing public comment on the conceptual plans in order to provide MDOT’s engineers with direction as they prepare construction plans.

This will be the official forum for providing comment on these plans. The concepts will be on display beginning at 6pm, with City, DDA, and MDOT staff available; the Planning Commission will hear comments during their meeting, beginning at 7pm.

Background information and conceptual drawings are available at:

http://cityofypsilanti.com/services/administration_services/planning_and_development/reports_and_publications/cross_st/Cross_streetscape_concepts.pdf

2. Reimagining Washtenaw Avenue: Washtenaw Avenue is the main transportation link of the eastern side of Washtenaw County. Development patterns in this area have generally been disconnected, auto-oriented uses, creating congestion and failing to take advantage of the central place of this corridor in the County. Improving transit and non-motorized transportation and encouraging redevelopment on this corridor could help all of the communities along it.

Over the past several months, the County’s planning department has been coordinating discussions between the City, Ypsilanti Township, Pittsfield Township, and City of Ann Arbor stakeholders about the potential for joint planning work on this corridor. City and County staff will be presenting the results of these discussions and some of the recommendations for potential collaboration.

More information on this project is available at,

http://annarborregionsuccess.org/action-teams/washtenaw-avenue-talent-center/washtenaw-avenue-talent-center

3. Non-Motorized Plan Draft: The City’s planning department has been working on a non-motorized plan for the City, to address infrastructure and policy issues around biking, walking, and similar transportation modes. A draft plan has been completed, and will be presented to the Planning Commission for review. The plan will also be distributed to surrounding communities and regional agencies for their review and comment prior to final adoption.

The most recent draft of the plan is available at,
