I suggest you read this agreement and let Council members Murdock and Robb know what you think (pmurdock at cityofypsilanti.com; brobb at cityofypsilanti.com) as well as the Mayor and Mr. Koryzno. In my opinion Mr. Koryzno has done the City and its residents a huge disservice. He was given the go ahead to start legal proceedings a month ago and he did not follow through. This agreement does little more than stall the eventual tearing down of the building. The understanding I get from reading this agreement is that in the eventuality that Beal does not remove the exterior supports or follow through with other parts of the condition the City can pull the $60,000 bond and tear the structure down using the money. The City should be aggressive here. Instead of working out a deal they should be fining Beal everyday and ordering that he do things. The Scaffolding in the street is illegal they don't have to work out an agreement. If Beal does meet the terms of this agreement he'll be able to keep the building the way it is ( besides the removal of the scaffolding) forever. Remember when Ed tried to work out an agreement to tear down the house at 631 North River (the one that had the tree through the roof and a wide open front door for two years). >From what I've witnessed, by lack of movement on the project. Mr. Beal has not done a single bit of work to show 'good faith' in the project. Why has Beal not been following this time line from day one? Why did the City have to reach an agreement with him to start work on a project he continues to claim he is still 100% behind? Beal has claimed that the credit market is to blame for his lack of movement on the project why should we assume there will be money in 6 months? This year there are going to be two more festivals at Riverside Park which will bring even more people to our town. The Thompson block should be removed before they get here. If you are in agreement please write your Council, the Mayor, and Ed Koryzno. Just my opinion on the matter, Kurt ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: "Pete Murdock" To: "murdock sweeney" Sent: Saturday, April 3, 2010 12:02:56 PM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: THompson Building Proposed Agreement for Tuesday's City Council Meeting Here is the proposed agreement between the City and Mr. Beal on the Thompson Building that is on the City Council Agenda for Tuesday, April 6th. It is called 'Capture The Trash.' Its a trash pick-up day at Riverside and Frog Island parks with some competition added. I'd really like to have a group of folks from the PPNA to come down and join me. Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty and torn since a lot of the pick-up takes place on the wooded hills. There are several ways to win a variety of prizes. Its a good day for adults and kids so please come out. The parks really need a good clean up. In Police news: I've heard about a lot of cars being broken into at the Rice Street parking lot (behind Aubrees). Make sure when you park you car anywhere, even your driveway, you lock your doors and hide any valuables. Amazingly, valuables means loose change too. It is a backyard organic garden/urban farm service. I basically install, plant, maintain, weed, and harvest a garden for you in your backyard. (I am also more than happy to teach you while I am working.) This business promotes sustainability, balance, abundance, and a new vision for our cities and our connection to food. Please read my description below if you want all the details. Please pass my name on to family and friends. Thanks so much!!! Erica Choberka 734-395-3405 Picture a colorful and bountiful garden bursting with life in your yard. Imagine the taste of freshly harvested vegetables and herbs. By having a backyard garden, you get to experience abundance and connectivity. You know exactly where your food comes from. You have the pleasure of fresh grown organic vegetables and none of the work involved (and much less grass to mow). The gardens I create are filled with positive connections and harmony. Flowers, vegetables, and herbs comingle together to produce beauty and abundance. Take your family off the fresh food grid from late May through October (beyond if you choose to preserve and store your harvest). What I provide: creation of an organic, 3 season, companion planted, urban garden in your backyard, custom built to your family size and eating habits. I design and install your garden. I bring all the transplants, seeds, stakes, cages, trellises, and homemade organic fertilizer. I visit your garden on a weekly schedule (April ? October) to insure everything is growing well. These visits include pest inspection, weeding, harvesting, and succession planting. At the end of the visit, I leave a harvest basket at your backdoor that is filled with a robust variety of fresh seasonal produce, herbs, and flowers. If you choose to be present during the visit, I am happy to teach you the process as well. The list of vegetables, herbs, and flowers you have to choose from is quite extensive. I provide a newsletter that provides recipes and tips for storage. Urban Pioneer is a combined effort between the farmer and your family, and it promotes sustainability. It creates a balanced & responsible relationship between people, the food they eat, and the farmer who grows it. This mutually supportive relationship between myself and community members helps develop an economically stable local food system within the city. It helps to keep another family in SE Michigan, and it demonstrates that we can beautify our cities and feed ourselves. I only have room for 8 more families. Please contact me if you are interested. 734-395-3405 Local Radio: There is a lot going on with Local Radio here in Ypsilanti: A Dwight Street Neighbor wanted to let you folks know about John Latini's Show on A3 Radio. John is a great local musician and I'm sure his show is great. There is one big problem in that I've never been successful at hearing anything through their website - I hope you have better luck. This Sunday at 6pm at A3 Radio there will be a live broadcast of "The Folkit Show" featuring Ypsi's own John Latini. It's an hour and a half of interview and music. This live broadcast happens 2 Sundays a month and has been going on for many years with the seemingly bottomless pool of local talent. A3 Radio is at 4 E. Cross. On Saturday's you can hear the Roots Music Project on WEMU 89.1FM from noon till 2pm. Jeremy gives good insight on coming shows and likes to play local music. Its a good show, check it out. I also want to remind you of AM1700 which is a radio station broadcasting from S. Washington in Downtown. The signal isn't really strong but you can stream it at http://am1700radio.com/ . May 1st is the projected true launch of the station so get ready for hosted shows with a lot of diverse and local content. Library Plant Sale - Email her for the order form Hi, I am on the board of the Friends of the Ypsilanti Library and I wanted to make you all aware of a fundraiser that we are doing to benefit the teen and youth area at the Michigan Avenue branch. The Friends are having a plant sale. We?ve never had a plant sale before but we are hoping to GROW some funds for the library! There are two options for buying plants. 1. Preorder your plants from this amazing assortment. 2. Come by the Whittaker Road branch on Saturday May 15 th from 11am to 3pm and pick from the plants that will be available that day. There will be a much smaller assortment available that day so I would encourage you to preorder if possible. Preordered plants will need to be picked up Saturday May 15 th from 11am to 3pm at the Whittaker Road branch (at 5577 Whittaker Road ). The plants will be coming from two Michigan growers. The flats, hanging baskets and perennials will come from Sell Farms in Ypsi Township . The organic vegetable and herb seedlings will come from Cinzori Organic Farm outside Grand Rapids . I have worked with these two growers on sales for our school and I can guarantee that their plants are healthy and fresh! If you want to preorder, the form AND payment are due by Saturday May 1. Orders can be turned in at any branch of the library or at the Friends Shop at Whittaker Road . I would be happy to collect your order & payment and save you a trip to the library! Or feel free to drop it in my mailbox. Also, the Friends are having their May booksale at the Whittaker Road branch on Friday May 14 11am ? 5pm , Saturday May 15 11am ? 3pm and Sunday May 16 1pm ? 3pm . Please stop by and browse! There?s always a great assortment of books of all types, including children?s books, at great prices! If you have books that you would like to donate to the Friends, donations are always welcome at the Whittaker Road branch. Or let me know and I can take them in for you and get you a donation receipt. As you may be aware, the downturn in the economy has resulted in lower tax revenues. The state funding to libraries is being cut. But library usage is way up and services and resources are in great demand. Please help support Ypsi?s award winning library! If you have any ideas about fundraisers for the library, please let me know. I?m the new fundraising coordinator for the Friends and I?d love to hear any ideas you might have. Please let me know if you have any questions about the plant sale or library. Thanks! Please join us at the Gilbert Residence on South Huron at 7pm, Monday, April 26. So what is Time Banking? Time Banks Weave Community One Hour at a Time For every hour you spend doing something for someone in your community, you earn one Time Dollar. Then you have a Time Dollar to spend on having someone do something for you. It's that simple. Yet it also has profound effects. Time Banks change neighborhoods and whole communities. Time Banking is a social change movement in 22 countries and six continents. The first is the application to become an official 'Yard Seller' at the June 12th East Side Yard Sale. I've made plans to have my own, 'Yard Sale Party' and I think you should too. I don't think there can be anything better than getting rid of junk for cash while having a BBQ. Since I am committing to having a yard sale I'll take donations of items to sell with the proceeds from those items going to 'The Friends of Prospect Park.' If you have things you think will sell please put them aside and we'll try to sell them. I've also attached a "Planting Calendar" I believe I received this from Beth Bashert as part of the Transition Ypsi Mailing list. Speaking of gardens, it appears that the City is short on Mulch this year as I found out when I visited Water-Works park. Looks like we'll have to buy our own for the time being. There is Free Compost at Water Works park. Remember, the compost comes from the things you put in your 'yard waste containers' so please be considerate and avoid putting trash in with your yard waste. Below, You will find the schedule for the Prospect Park Litter Patrol. Each Neighborhood has 1 Sunday a Month - Starting at 6pm. It only takes about an hour to pick up all the litter in the park. Please come out on our Litter days and feel free to stop by to meet other community minded folks on any Sunday at 6pm. What are you doing Monday? Want to carry signs and complain to local politicians? I received this from the city -- The full release is also attached: Dear Neighbors: The City is pleased to announce that demolition and clean up will begin next week on Water Street. We will be hosting a short ceremony on Monday, May 3, 2010 at 4:30 to kick off the demolition, please see the attached press release for details. We would love to have you come out as we celebrate this next chapter in Water Street! Time for a Kurt Rant: -- Sorry but I have to editorialize for a moment. I Personally find it ridiculous that the city thinks spending another $850,000 of taxpayer money is a reason to celebrate. GRANTS ARE NOT FREE - THEY COME OUT OF TAX DOLLARS. I think they intend this to be a feel good celebration as if we are moving forward on the Water-Street project, remember this is an election year. I agree, it will be nice to finally get rid of the buildings that are a constant reminder of the working businesses and occupied houses that our former City Council and City Manager thought weren't good enough for the City. Hopefully, the remaining City Council members who voted for the Water Street Project (I believe there are two) and the City Manager (who has been in charge through the whole mess) will be on hand to answer questions. If you want to join me on Monday at 4:30pm please let me know, or show up. prospectparkneighborhood at comcast.net This is a crazy weekend for live Music around the city since the Totally Awesome Fest is happening, some of it in our neighborhood. AnnArbor.Com and Mark Maynard have written pretty good summaries of what to expect. The Schedule can be found at AnnArbor.com. Feel free to drag the kids down North River (2nd house North of Forest) for some 'interesting performances' as well as some good music (click here for directions and schedule) . It really is a community event so don't be scared to show up off the street. The new live music venue downtown, Savoy, now has a website with their schedule posted. http://www.livesavoy.com/events.php The Thompson Block Hearing has been delayed ... Shocking isn't it? But the Police have say they have a suspect for the fire. I've heard through the grapevine, not through the YPD, that they have suspects in custody for the recent break-ins in the neighborhood.
