I've written Ed Koryzno (City Manager) about sidewalks and Stan Kirton (Head of the Department of Public Works) about the streets (did you notice they were salted today?). I'm especially concerned with "motor wheel," RM Classic Cars, Michigan Ladder and the Farm Bureau building turned dump all of which don't shovel their walks and haven't for years. If you are a one of the many that walk from our neighborhood to EMU or anywhere else that you have to walk on these walkways contact the city manager ekoryzno at cityofypsilanti.com. Don't forget to mention the Thompson Block and the Depot while you are at it. OK enough of that, Here are a few things that have come across my inbox that I thought I would pass along. When you are around the Downtown Area tune into AM1700. Its not fully formatted but it is true Ypsi-Local Radio. Sadly, it doesn't come in at my house but it does pretty well west of Washington Street. I'll keep you updated as the station progresses. Last Friday Night I made my rounds Downtown and it was really great. I suggest you follow this pattern if you think there is nothing to do in Ypsi on a Friday night. Of course, there are a lot more things to do and places to eat than the ones below. I suggest you get out and take in some of the downtown nightlife and figure it out for yourself. Downtown isn't just a place for college kids. In fact, there were more 'older' locals than college kids at the places I visited. Here was my Friday night. 1. I walked through the parks to the Riverside Arts Center. I stopped in to view their latest art exhibit in the basement. It was pretty good stuff and was FREE. 2. I walked down to Michigan Avenue to Haabs where I had a wonderfully cooked steak. HAABS is a great steakhouse. FYI: it also has the best happy hour in town for appetisers and drinks. 3. I then went to the Tap Room where John Latini and Friends play every Friday night. The music side of the Tap Room is Smoke Free and roomy. John always puts on a great set and he brings in very talented musicians to play. There is no cover and I believe it is $2.25 for a pint of Bell's beer or a Bacardi drink. John does pass the hat for the traveling musicians that he brings in. It is a great night of entertainment. 4. I stopped into the Keystone Martini Bar for the 'Roots Music Night' which is every Friday night.- THIS IS ALSO A SMOKE FREE BAR - Dragon Wagon was playing along with some friends of theirs. It was nicely crowded and had a great vibe. $1.00 PBRs was the special of the night. I'd also like to point out that there is a DJ night every Saturday and Jazz on Mondays (I think). Check out the AnnArbor.com article on Keystone. Below you will find info on: ? MLK day at Ypsilanti Public Schools ? What do you do when someone comes begging? ? I am in no way judging these beggars and realize they just need to get a little booze in their bellies but there was some concern. I asked the Chief about what to do and this was her response. As far as panhandling/begging. The city has an ordinance that is available to be viewed on line through Municode.com. The commonly one referred to as begging or panhandling falls under Sec. 74-90. These are misdemeanors according to our city ordinance. Yes-calling the non-emergency line is certainly what I would suggest in this instance. Sec. 74-90. Unlawful solicitation. Except as otherwise provided in chapter 22, article V, it shall be unlawful for any person to solicit the immediate payment of money or goods from another person, whether or not in exchange for goods, services, or other consideration, under any of the following circumstances: (1) On private property, except as otherwise permitted by chapter 22, article V, unless the solicitor has permission from the owner or occupant; (2) On private property except as otherwise permitted by chapter 22, article V, when the owner or occupant thereof has displayed a "No Soliciting" or "No Peddling" sign on the premises; (3) In any public transportation vehicle or public transportation facility; (4) In any public place as defined in section 74-81 and including any parking lot; (5) From a person who is in any vehicle on the street; (6) By obstructing and or impeding the free passage of pedestrian or vehicle traffic; (7) Within 12 feet of a bank or automated teller machine; (8) By moving within two feet of the person solicited, unless that person has indicated that he/she wishes to be solicited; (9) By following and continuing to solicit a person who walks away from the solicitor, or who verbally or nonverbally refuses the solicitor; (10) By knowingly making a false or misleading representation in the course of a solicitation; (11) In a manner that appears likely to cause a reasonable person of ordinary sensibilities to feel intimidated, threatened or harassed; (12) From a person who is a patron at any outdoor cafe or restaurant. (Code 1983, ? 9.128; Ord. No. 1007, ? 1, 6-21-2005) Sec. 74-86. Loitering and obstructing passage. It shall be unlawful for any person to loiter on any street or sidewalk or in a park or public building or conduct himself in any public place so as to obstruct the free and uninterrupted passage of the public. (Code 1983, ? 9.119) Meet the Chief: If you are interested in meeting with our new Chief you can. This Thursday from 5-7pm at the Keystone Bar - Located under J. Here are some events you might want to attend this weekend: I suggest grabbing food downtown before you do anything. DaLat Vietnamese Restaurant looks horrible but the food is great, try it out sometime. Don't forget about J-Neils, Pub-13, Biggies and Beezies there is a great variety to choose from. I'd suggest stopping by the Riverside Arts Center and checking out the gallery but since they don't shovel their walk its probably too dangerous. Friday Night Live Music: ? ALSO: Subject: Found Dog Hey, Kurt. We found a young pit bull mix on the corner of Stanley and Gordon this afternoon. She was young, probably about 6-8 months, extremely friendly, and responded to basic commands. She was only wearing a choker chain and wasn't microchipped, so we have no way of finding the owner. I didn't recognize her, so I don't think she was one of Chuck's. We took her to the Humane Society of Huron Valley. The address is: 3100 Cherry Hill Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48105. We'll be putting up posters around the neighborhood this evening. I'd appreciate it if you could e-mail the neighborhood to let people know, in case someone knows her owner. I hope your holiday season was pleasant. Thanks for all that you do. ~Jim Dusseau Speaking of Neighborhood Pets - who owns the Orange Cat with a bobbed tail? According to the Semcog Video there will be SEMCOG run buses to take folks from the Train Stations to destinations around the cities all included in an economical fare. As for the Freighthouse - Ed did a great job explaining where all of the money has gone. It looks like "The Friends of the Freighthouse" have their act together. Bids for the major project are coming sometime next week so look for workers to be on site in the near future. As I understand it they are in need of some more donations from the folks in the City. It appears that for every dollar you give 3 will be added by other sources as a match plus offer (up to $25,000 total received). Donate now and make your dollar, two, or more count. They need to raise this $25,000 by April 1st. Check out their website for more information - YOU CAN DONATE THROUGH THE WEBSIT E. I think this is a worthwhile cause so please donate. YPS has issued a plan to reduce its deficit. One is to repurpose Adams School -- Read the Article Here I don't have kids but I do know that I like the 'new' Principal at Adams a lot. If you want to keep the school open or at least make a good showing of it I suggest mobilizing. I believe there are a lot of reasons to keep Adams open and most of them are due to the community involvement and Prospect Park. The YMCA summer programs are involved with the school and use the park, We are looking to help develop a curriculum that uses the Luna Lake Native Garden and the possible new community garden. These are the types of things that we need to bring to the schoolboard. Don't go to them saying "Don't close my school" tell them why. If you want to get involved let me know. Chief Amy Walker says that the dispatch situation is going well and she will work within the budget City Council gives her. She did say that there are new menu options if you call the police non-emergency number so keep that in mind. Water Street News : Mayor and Council Members: I wanted to give you an update on the Water Street Demolition Project. We received bids last Friday and were elated to find the bids came in much lower than expected. We will be interviewing a few companies next week and will have a better understanding of our time line and total costs. As of right now ETC, Inc (our environmental consultant) feel confident that we will have enough money to take down every building on Water Street as well as some other work. I will continue to keep you posted. We are very excited about these bids and I wanted to share with you this great news. Also, I am tentatively planning on holding a Water Street Meeting/Update at the March 2, 2010 City Council Meeting. We will provide a 2009 ?Year in Review? as well as recommend a new action plan for 2010. Cntr. 1015 N. Congress St. The Community Records Songwriting Process starts with a discussion of how music is energy. When we write a song together, we send energy out into the community, positive or negative. Our discussion of how to send positive energy out into the community begins to yield lyrics, which determine the mood/tone of the song and then...we're off and running. Community Records L3C is a social mission organization that builds community through music. Community Records runs songwriting programs and workshops in area schools, including Ypsilanti, Willow Run & Wayne-Westland schools. CR helps people write songs collaboratively. For this special session, you are invited to write a song with your neighbors. CR will facilitate the process (which is guaranteed to be lively) and send you home a bona fide songwriter. Musicians and non-musicians alike are invited to participate. A final, mixed copy of the song in .mp3 format will be emailed or mailed to you soon after our songwriting/recording session. Presenting will be Akili Jackson, Development & Learning Officer & Jesse Morgan, Creative Operations Officer for Community Records. Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments. See Click Fix http://www.seeclickfix.com/ypsilanti If you've ever used the City of Ypsilanti's problem center you might know that it doesn't work all that well. Here is a new site that opens the communication lines between the citizens, the City, and the hopefully some of our utility providers. You can choose to watch an area (like Ward 3) and have all problems that are reported in that area sent to you via email. There are issues that you'd hope the City will fix but there may be issues that you can take care of. Please sign up since this site will only work if there are a lot of people using it. Folks, It was great to listen to some fine live music and see some of my Normal Park neighbors at the Underground for the "Talk of the Neighborhood-Music in the Neighborhood" concert and I'm looking forward to the next concert on February 17th. I did make a mistake in reporting that the Muruga & Friends concert this Saturday, January 30th would be at the Underground. It will be held at Club Divine . Muruga and his "regular" bandmates as well as his "occasional" bandmates from all over the planet are all seasoned world-class artists. A great performance is guaranteed. --Frank DEAR FRIENDS I WOULD BE GREATEFULL IF YOU WOULD PASS THIS FLYER ATTACH AROUND AND ALSO COME LOVE MURUGA http://musartcompany.com/ http://www.murugabooker.com http://www.myspace.com/muruga http://www.myspace.com/freefunkspace Adams School - Is still in the running to be closed I thought when the story about Adams school's possible closing was released there was going to be a lot of concern. So far, it seems that the parents and folks around Adams aren't really concerned. There is a group meeting to try to save Chappel Elementary School. If you are interested in forming a group to save Adams the time to get organized is now. If you know of a group already formed please let me know so I can get it out to the list. Help a Dog Niko is a 14 year old dog that the Huron Valley Human Society has been holding for over 150 days. His cruelty case is coming up in court on February 4th, 2010 and it is the hope of the humane society that Judge Mike Gerou will release Niko to the HVHS so that he can be placed in a loving, forever home immediately. He has been treated for the injuries and neglect and needs to be in a home, not a shelter. It would also be wonderful if the "owner" be made responsible for Niko's medical treatment, boarding and court expenses. Please write or e mail the judge at 35th District Court, 660 Plymouth Rd., Plymouth, MI 48170. mgerou at 35thdistrictcourt.org Transition Ypsi Meeting Monday Feb 1st 7pm at Bombadills I really hope that you will come on Monday if you can. (Thanks to those who already RSVPed.) I think it's pretty clear that no one in our government is able or willing to place a priority on climate change or peak oil. With the recent Supreme Court ruling, it seems that corporations are poised to take over our federal government! We have to act as responsible custodians of our community and we have to act now. Let's talk on Monday about the best ways to do that. Even if you can't come, maybe you can hang up a flier or two? Thanks, all. Lisa Bashert wombbat at umich.edu Last year, Transition Town Ypsi co-sponsored the Training for Transition, showed films about a future that includes global warming, less access to cheap energy, and economic hard times, offered a series on permaculture, taught re-skilling classes, and more... What will we do in the coming year? At this meeting we plan to form a vision for Transition Town Ypsilanti 2010. Below is a list of ideas that have been brought up. Please bring more ideas to this visioning process and help us plan our goals and events for the coming year. List of ideas (gathered from many different people): Visioning sessions Book group with a Transition theme (ie. Transition Timeline, Depletion and Abundance, etc.) Classes (through Talk of the Neighborhood?): *Re-skilling classes (darning, sewing, canning and preserving, salves, carpentry, fixing and re-use, gardening) *Sustainability *Understanding climate change/peak oil *Energy reduction/alternative energy *Native Landscaping *ABCs of Local Eating *Beekeeping 101 (being offered TODAY!) *Chickens 101 *3 and 4 season gardens *Fruit trees *Seed starting City beekeeping group Pods for sharing gardening tools, skills, childcare among nearby households Storytelling Holiday Sing (Dec 2011) Transition All-Acoustic Cafe Potlucks on Transition Topics on your own block with near neighbors Folk School (a giant long-term goal) Neighborhood Watch/ self defense class Seniors' storytelling about earlier times in Ypsi ====================== Transition Initiatives are based on four key assumptions: 1. That life with dramatically lower energy consumption is inevitable, and that it's better to plan for it than to be taken by surprise. 2. That our settlements and communities presently lack the resilience to enable them to weather the severe energy shocks that will accompany [less access to cheap energy]. 3. That we have to act collectively, and we have to act now. 4. That by unleashing the collective genius of those around us to creatively and proactively design our energy descent, we can build ways of living that are more connected, more enriching and that recognize the biological limits of our planet. --Rob Hopkins >From YPS Open House.
