Luna Lake Native Plant Garden Fundraiser
This will be a great opportunity for those of you that want to help with the Native Plant Garden at Prospect Park but didn't get an opportunity to dig in the dirt. Just show up listen to some tunes while you eat and drink. If you can't make this you are welcome to donate to the project. Any sum of money will help with improvements to the Garden and Prospect Park as a whole.

Freighthouse Deconstruction -
In preparation for the coming renovations to the freighthouse there is a need to remove some of the interior walls. This Saturday will be an open workday starting at 9am. The project shouldn't take that long. Please bring deconstruction tools and perhaps a ladder. Just show up if you want to help. I believe there is also a need for people to help sort through some of the items now stored in the rooms that are to be removed. If you are interested stop by on Saturday.

Roots Music Night at the Keystone Underground (below J Neils) Friday night
Here is my weekly reminder to get you out to a great night of Live Music. Great Bands, No Smoking, $1.00 cover, $1.25 Pabst. Starts at 10pm. Come out and support Live Music.

See Click Fix http://www.seeclickfix.com/ypsilanti

If you've ever used the City of Ypsilanti's problem center you might know that it doesn't work all that well. Here is a new site that opens the communication lines between the citizens, the City, and the hopefully some of our utility providers. You can choose to watch an area (like Ward 3) and have all problems that are reported in that area sent to you via email. There are issues that you'd hope the City will fix but there may be issues that you can take care of. Please sign up since this site will only work if there are a lot of people using it.

Folks,
It was great to listen to some fine live music and see some of my Normal Park neighbors at the Underground for the "Talk of the Neighborhood-Music in the Neighborhood" concert and I'm looking forward to the next concert on February 17th.
I did make a mistake in reporting that the Muruga & Friends concert this Saturday, January 30th would be at the Underground. It will be held at Club Divine .
Muruga and his "regular" bandmates as well as his "occasional" bandmates from all over the planet are all seasoned world-class artists. A great performance is guaranteed.

DEAR FRIENDS I WOULD BE GREATEFULL IF YOU WOULD PASS THIS FLYER ATTACH AROUND AND ALSO COME LOVE MURUGA

Adams School - Is still in the running to be closed
I thought when the story about Adams school's possible closing was released there was going to be a lot of concern. So far, it seems that the parents and folks around Adams aren't really concerned. There is a group meeting to try to save Chappel Elementary School. If you are interested in forming a group to save Adams the time to get organized is now. If you know of a group already formed please let me know so I can get it out to the list.

Help a Dog

Niko is a 14 year old dog that the Huron Valley Human Society has been holding for over 150 days. His cruelty case is coming up in court on February 4th, 2010 and it is the hope of the humane society that Judge Mike Gerou will release Niko to the HVHS so that he can be placed in a loving, forever home immediately. He has been treated for the injuries and neglect and needs to be in a home, not a shelter. It would also be wonderful if the "owner" be made responsible for Niko's medical treatment, boarding and court expenses. Please write or e mail the judge at 35th District Court, 660 Plymouth Rd., Plymouth, MI 48170.

Transition Ypsi Meeting Monday Feb 1st 7pm at Bombadills

I really hope that you will come on Monday if you can. (Thanks to those who already RSVPed.) I think it's pretty clear that no one in our government is able or willing to place a priority on climate change or peak oil. With the recent Supreme Court ruling, it seems that corporations are poised to take over our federal government!

We have to act as responsible custodians of our community and we have to act now. Let's talk on Monday about the best ways to do that.

Even if you can't come, maybe you can hang up a flier or two? Thanks, all.

Lisa Bashert wombbat at umich.edu

Last year, Transition Town Ypsi co-sponsored the Training for Transition, showed films about a future that includes global warming, less access to cheap energy, and economic hard times, offered a series on permaculture, taught re-skilling classes, and more... What will we do in the coming year?

At this meeting we plan to form a vision for Transition Town Ypsilanti 2010. Below is a list of ideas that have been brought up. Please bring more ideas to this visioning process and help us plan our goals and events for the coming year.

List of ideas (gathered from many different people):

Visioning sessions

Book group with a Transition theme (ie. Transition Timeline, Depletion and Abundance, etc.)

Classes (through Talk of the Neighborhood?):

*Re-skilling classes (darning, sewing, canning and preserving, salves, carpentry, fixing and re-use, gardening)

*Sustainability

*Understanding climate change/peak oil

*Energy reduction/alternative energy

*Native Landscaping

*ABCs of Local Eating

*Beekeeping 101 (being offered TODAY!)

*Chickens 101

*3 and 4 season gardens

*Fruit trees

*Seed starting

City beekeeping group

Pods for sharing gardening tools, skills, childcare among nearby households

Storytelling

Holiday Sing (Dec 2011)

Transition All-Acoustic Cafe

Potlucks on Transition Topics on your own block with near neighbors

Folk School (a giant long-term goal)

Neighborhood Watch/ self defense class

Seniors' storytelling about earlier times in Ypsi

======================

Transition Initiatives are based on four key assumptions:

1. That life with dramatically lower energy consumption is inevitable, and that it's better to plan for it than to be taken by surprise.

2. That our settlements and communities presently lack the resilience to enable them to weather the severe energy shocks that will accompany [less access to cheap energy].

3. That we have to act collectively, and we have to act now.

4. That by unleashing the collective genius of those around us to creatively and proactively design our energy descent, we can build ways of living that are more connected, more enriching and that recognize the biological limits of our planet. --Rob Hopkins
